The young man snapped picture after picture, trying to take advantage of the wash of golden light through the trees before it faded away into the evening. At first, he wasn’t paying much attention to the people walking through the park, but after he got the day’s photographs developed, he was determined to go back.

Maes Hughes quickly sorted through the piles of new pictures, tossing some into a messy pile at the end of the bed and laying others into neat rows before him. Once the initial selection was complete, it was time to take longer looks at the ones he thought turned out the best. One image in particular caught his eye.

A young woman with light brown hair was looking towards the sunset, her face illuminated by the warm glow. She was smiling slightly, a large straw bag hanging from her shoulder and some flowers poking out. Maes couldn’t stop looking at the picture, captivated by the expression of quiet joy on her face. He looked through the rest of the pictures he’d set aside and found two more with the young woman. He studied those as well, intrigued enough to wonder who she was.Continue reading

Conversations in Winter (Fullmetal Alchemist Fan Fiction)

Summary: Her voice reminded him of the last time they’d spoken in Ishbal. There was a sense of finality in the quiet words, and she walked away without looking back, shoulders slumped. He caught up with her and walked by her side, the sounds of their footsteps echoing ahead of them as they walked the hallways of their world.

I’m sure there is rampant OOC-ness in most of this, but since there isn’t a huge amount of “official” canon to go by, I’m making it up as I go. A companion to my story “Conversations by Starlight.” This one is also manga-verse, after chapter 67.

National Border of Amestris and Drachma, Briggs Mountain Fortress

She checked in at the first guard station, telling them to mark her return but not to notify the guard stations further in. It was her usual routine when returning from a mission and after five years everyone was used to it by now. Her goal was to get inside the fortress without being seen and to make note of whichever guards she’d gotten past. Even after all this time she could still easily count the number of times she’d been discovered before checking in with her superiors.

Tonight was made more difficult by the presence of guards in an unexpected location, apparently standing watch over a large mound of something out in the snow. She managed to dance along the edges of the light until she reached the massive doorway inside, and then her true work began. Most of the men there knew she’d been away and until her return was announced, anyone seeing her could turn her in for a reward of sorts. Usually it was something extra like rec time or something from the commissary. She never minded paying for the rewards herself and it helped everyone all around to have a goal to work towards. Her job was made more difficult by having to find one of her superiors to report in without knowing ahead of time where they were located.

Tonight she decided to find Major Miles first, if only because she would spend enough time working with the Major General when giving her report. Her quarry wasn’t in his office, nor did he seem to be anywhere on the administration level. She finally found him on one of the residence levels, waiting impatiently outside a conference room. He gave no indication he was aware of her presence when she stepped up behind him to salute.

Summary: He stared at her, finally taking to time to actually look. In the months since they’d met, he realized that they’d never seen each other by daylight before. Or rather, he’d never seen her. All his knowledge of her was wrapped in starlight and night. Even though he’d wanted to see her by daylight, the darkness was her domain.

Ishballan Civil War front

Men countered the chill of the desert air by huddling around fires. Overhead, stars covered the night sky with silent clarity. Wrapped in their uniforms and cloaks, they were gathered between tents, speaking amongst themselves in hushed whispers.

“Did you hear? The State Alchemists are taking the field tomorrow morning.”

“This war will be over soon now that they are here.”

“Wonder how they’re going to fight?”

The sounds drifted on the wind, random snippets of conversations repeated over fires, passed around like precious gems by the war-weary soldiers. The woman walking quietly through the darkness took the words in and held them to her, turning the meanings over and over in her mind.

“So the Fuhrer finally decided to bring in the alchemists. I guess the regular army wasn’t killing Ishballans quickly enough for him.” Her voice was thoughtful.

“Is that what you think, Major?”

“Marshall, does it really matter what I think? We’ve been in this hell for almost four years now. Ours is one of the only intact squads left, and that’s not saying much. How much longer can this go on? Honestly, wiping out an entire race is just a bit extreme, wouldn’t you agree?”

“Lorie, look, I know what you’re saying, but you’re wrong. This is something that needs to be done and the Fuhrer is doing the right thing. This war will be over soon and we can all go home. I know I’m looking forward to being able to drink or eat something without sand infesting it.”

“There is that.”

The couple continued on their way, their forms melding into the darkness that surrounded the camps.

The next morning dawned in a blaze of glorious reds, light spreading from the east in a wave, saturating the day in crimson. Ash and smoke soon floated on the breeze, dust clinging to everything. Buildings collapsed, were reformed, remade, recycled. The crimson of blood soon saturated the ground, running in waves to mirror the skies above. The alchemists had gone to war.

Small Favors

Another fanfic I wrote and posted over on Fanfiction.net , but this time it’s for the Fullmetal Alchemist anime/manga series.  I started watching FMA on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim on Saturday nights until they rearranged their schedule, and am now in the process of collecting the DVDs for the anime series (only need the last five, discs 9-13 to complete my collection).  I’ve also picked up the 10 manga volumes so far released here in the US for Christmas and have already plowed my way through them all.
The storyline of the anime completely diverges from the manga about halfway through the series.  This story follows the manga-verse after chapter 38.Continue reading
